New Boat: Southerly 38

Lifting keels or centerboards have long been an option for sailors finding themselves facing thin-water sailing but not wanting to give up on deep-keel performance. Southerly Yachts has been perfecting its swing keel and that feature of the new Southerly 38 is sure to be one of the most attractive to potential owners. And even before they find out what’s under the water, the 38’s sleek look should draw them in.

The boat is designed to be sailed by two people but features a big sailplan for superior upwind performance. The fractional rig has double swept spreaders, a large mainsail and a self-tacking furling jib. A gennaker is also available to be flown from a removable stainless steel bowsprit.

Borrowing from the successful 42RST, the 38 has a large aft cockpit with twin helm stations that control twin rudders. The traveler is on the pilothouse coachroof with control lines led to the helming stations. A hinged transom door offers good access to the stern and a telescoping ladder is an added convenience. Underwater, that famous hydraulically controlled swing keel offers a draft ranging from 2 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet, 6 inches. A fixed-keel option drawing 6 feet, 4 inches is also available.

Lots of windows provided by the raised coachroof give a light feeling to the interior. Storage and large work surfaces are paramount in this design. A large aft cabin has a centerline double berth and an en suite head. Forward is another en suite cabin with twin V-berths that can convert to a double. Owners will be able to select their preferred interior wood, choice of upholstery and additional comfort options.
The Southerly 38, the first of which is to launch this month, is so popular it has already sold out for 2008. Southerly is taking orders for 2009 delivery.
