Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 42

2018 January 1

Modern design capitalizes on a bright and airy layout

This very nice looking sloop was designed by Berret-Racoupeau and is built by Wauquiez. Here we see the design pendulum swing hard to the comfort side of the scale. I would call this a raised saloon configuration with an aft cockpit. If you are tired of dark and gloomy interiors, this is the boat for you.

There’s nothing particularly unusual in the hull form but the bow looks quite full to my eye.  We can see that this is a medium displacement boat by today’s standards. End treatments show once again that volume was the target. There is a chine aft. (Is there an echo in here?) If you go with the standard draft keel with 5 feet 5 inches draft you will get a trimmed off rudder. I think the deeper draft model drawing just over 7 feet would be a much better way to go.

You can choose from a two-stateroom layout or a three-stateroom layout. The forward stateroom is spacious, although the double berth is tapered toward the feet. There is a large head with a shower stall. The aft head also has a shower stall. The renderings make the saloon look really appealing. There are big windows almost all the way around. This will be a bright space and should feel huge. The galley is in a straight line to port with a U-shaped dinette to port. I like the long galley layout, so long as you are not cooking offshore.

The rig is fractional with an SA/D of 16.53 which is on the low side. There is a recessed track for a self-tacking working jib. The cockpit is big and has a centerline drop-leaf table with stowage just forward of the twin wheels. I suspect you will dine in the cockpit every chance the weather gives you.

I like the contours and proportions of this deck. This is a very handsome design in the modern style.
