Saffier SE 37

2018 April 1

This daysailer has everything you need for an afternoon sail

Let’s say you want a comfortable daysailer that represents modern design trends. This design by Satellite Yacht Design in the Netherlands and built by the Hennevanger family tries to tick off all those boxes.

The hull has 3 feet 2 inches of total overhang and almost all of that is aft. The D/L is 133.5 on a displacement of 10,580 pounds. The L/B is 3.18 indicating a beamy boat but there is some taper to the plan view aft. The hull sections show some deadrise forward for V-ed forward sections. This deadrise fairs out by amidships and the aft sections are tangent at centerline and quite flat. I’d prefer to see those aft sections not so flat and wetted surface reduced for better light air boat speed. Draft is 6 feet 11 inches.

Below there is a very small head tucked to starboard aft. Adjacent to the head is a small galley. There are port and starboard settee berths and a double V berth. There has been a lot of thought given to the cockpit layout. The twin wheels are forward next to the only two winches. This is a great daysailing deck layout but it will not lend itself to round the buoys racing very well. I am a big fan of wide cockpit seats. The rig is what you would expect with swept spreaders and a wand or “flicker” for getting the running backstay away from the square top mainsail’s roach. The SA/D is 25.6. The photos I have show the boat with a low windshield but the drawings do not reflect this detail. It’s a very nice looking boat and I like the windshield.

Designer and pal of mine Chuck Paine calls boats built like this “Legacy boats.” I think this means that the quality produced goes well beyond what you need for just a boat. The Saffier 37 is like an exotic sports car that you keep forever.
